Research Fund – Brief

One of the objectives of National Centre of Artificial Intelligence(NCAI) is the national
movement on R&D and commercialization of Artificial Intelligence in Pakistan; a major
objective to “Build national capacity to carry out R&D in the emerging field of artificial
intelligence by solving at least a small number of ‘hard’ AI problems”. To achieve this
objective, NCAI has allocated a fund of 200 M PKR to encourage and drive the research
in domain of AI in Pakistan amongst the academic and industrial sector. This fund is
based on merit and promotes R&D to solve indigenous problems.

1. Point-of-Care electronic test kit for rapid detection of pathogens using graphene-transistors as biosensors

Development of a smart, cloud-connected, cost-effective and portable point-of-care rapid test-kit for real time pathogens detection in a label free manner with AI support from a centralized back-end server employing deep machine learning and pattern classification to enhance the accuracy of the test and reduce false-flags

2. AID Path: AI based digital pathology for precision cancer diagnostics

The lab is focused on breast cancer detection using digital histopathology images to improve health care across Pakistan. Pathological slices are converted into digital format with the help of digital microscope and digital scanner.

3. Agri-DMaP: Internet of Things (IoT) and AI enabled system for crop disease monitoring and prediction

Agri-DMap is an IoT, AI, and edge computing-based solution for wheat rust disease detection and prediction in its early stages. This edge device consists of a camera connected with a Single Board Computer (SBC) and screen that will capture the high-resolution images of wheat, detect the wheat rust disease severity level, and display results on screen

4. On-chip epilepsy predictor using AI for chronic neurological disorders

To develop an ultra-low-power Artificial Intelligent (AI) seizure prediction processor integrated with an in-house developed EEG front-end at integrated circuit design level. The novelty of proposed work comes from:
On-sensor integration of AI-based classification processor for seizure prediction Overcoming issues of commercial EEG headset, i.e. bulkiness, prone to motion artifacts, and not wearable Miniaturized design with a battery life of a couple of days to a week

5. Re-designing E-recruitment using AI for Temporal Analysis

The main idea is to redesign the process of E-recruitment which will be based on AI and enhanced analysis of temporal data. The product will be an AI-powered recommender system which will help local and international organizations enhance their human resource management process and shortlisting the candidates.

6. An AI-based adaptive framework for personalized E-learning.

Provide personalized contents to each learner based on her level (adaptiveness) and preferred mode of learning (adaptability).

7. A Deep Learning based Automated Defect Detection System for Manufacturing Industry.

The system will take pictures of the objects on the conveyer belt. Apply deep learning to make a decision about the quality of the product and will place the product in the accept/reject bin.

8. Social Solidarity via Social Distancing

Social Solidarity via Social Distancing is a project that aims to study consumer/staff behavior, patterns and the effects on the retail sector and Manufacturing units. These actionable insights into consumer/ staff behavior would help to maximize sales, improve customer experience and efficiency.

9. Application of Artificial Intelligence in Vascular Disease Management.

An artificial intelligence-based solution which will be capable of handling and processing real-world labelled medical data and provide valuable and accurate feedback to surgeons and provide decision support.

10. Artificial Intelligence based Cardiac Monitoring System with Biotelemetry.

Aim to reduce carbon footprint of existing buildings and infrastructure by making their Heating-Ventilation-Air-Conditioning (HVAC) systems more efficient by developing AI and IOT
based solutions. It will be considered as energy management system for Indoor Environment.

11. Autonomous Indoor Environment Management System (AIEMS)

Development of Health Care Monitoring system having ability to pre-diagnose the disease and provide assistance to health practitioners.

12. Artificial intelligence as a pathway to reduce industrial downtime cost through hybrid predictive maintenance (ADVICE)

An intelligent cloud-based Machine Condition Monitoring and Analyzing system for predicting RUL and failure before it happens.
